Neal’s Yard Remedies are natural and organic beauty pioneers 92% of their physically processed agricultural ingredients (defined by the COSMOS standard) are certified organic by weight. Aside from the environmental benefits (see ‘sustainability’), this ensures that the ingredients maintain their antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. 

They are also committed to using no genetically modified (GM) ingredients.

They are Soil Association COSMOS certified.

Neal’s Yard Remedies has been deeply committed to ethics – both in terms of social impact and animal rights and welfare – since opening their doors in 1981. 

Although they do sell in China, they only sell online and therefore do not need to test their end product on animals in order to sell there. They are certified by Cruelty Free International and Soil Association COSMOS, which ensures the ethical treatment of animals both from an ingredient standpoint and end-product testing stage.

They also source their ingredients ethically, meaning they pay fairtrade prices for their ingredients, ensuring their suppliers earn a fair price for their produce, which in turn supports local communities and ensures they harvest in a sustainable manner.  They have a dedicated page where you can read about what ingredients are sourced where, and by who.

Their marketing campaigns address a diverse range of people. However, there is no evidence of intentional Universal Design principles used in their packaging design.

Packaging, Practices + Policies


Neal’s Yard Remedies are global leaders in sustainability. Their aim is to become a Net Positive business that benefits all aspects of environmental, social and economic sustainability whilst helping deliver the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals.  They are already certified Carbon Neutral but have committed to setting  Science Based Targets for ‘emissions intensity‘ (not counting carbon offsets) – which will help bring them to achieve their aims of 47% reduction by 2025 and an 87% reduction by 2050, compared to 2010.

Their eco-factory produces 5% of their energy from on-site solar panels, and this is topped up by a 100% UK sourced renewable tariff. They also use 100% renewable electricity and gas for our stores.

Greywater from manufacture and rainwater goes towards non-sanitary uses such as flushing toilets. This accounts for around 20% of our water use and they intend to remain at 20%, even as their production grows.
Another step they take to reduce their freshwater use is to aerate appropriate sink taps at our eco-factory. They also fund freshwater availability projects, such as rainwater collection tanks for their suppliers of tea tree oil in Kenya.
They successfully lobbied the UK government, alongside Greenpeace and Fauna & Flora International to lobbied the UK government to #BanTheBead, and are now working to continue the campaign with their international partners.

They are in the process of moving towards circularity – in which resources are reused rather than going to landfill. This is also part of their carbon and resource reduction strategy. They are minimising single-use packaging, particularly non-recycled and single-use plastic. So far they’ve switched most of their plastic bottles to 100% post-consumer recycled plastic and aim to be using entirely recycled plastic bottles by 2025, in line with the targets of the UK Plastics Pact.

The card and paper are responsibly sourced and either 100% recycled or certified by FSC® and PEFC, to help limit deforestation. These certifications ensure forests are responsibly managed and ensure chain of custody exists. Further to this their packaging is Carbon Balanced through the World Land Trust (WLT). which means they offset the amount of CO2 used to make their packaging by protecting tropical forest. Since 2012 they’ve helped save over 2,800,000m² of endangered forest, offsetting 250 tonnes of CO2.
